Our new Through the Lens community filmmaking programme is underway!

Running from March to June 2024, our Through the Lens programme will amplify the voices of local people in their communities by providing a platform to express themselves through short films, documentary, or fiction. In its inaugural year, we are working with young people in S2 to S4 from Craigroyston Community High School, Castlebrae Community High School, and Wester Hailes High School, along with adult groups comprising of local residents from North Edinburgh, Southeast Edinburgh, and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) learners.

Through our deep integration within these communities, we aim to cultivate a culture of creativity, education, and transformation. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that no one is excluded from the rewarding experience of participating in filmmaking activities and having creative control over the films they make. Participants will learn each stage of filmmaking through watching and discussing different types of films, and learning the key skills in camera, sound, directing, editing, and screenwriting, whilst being supported to use these skills to devise and produce a short film.

Our Through the Lens adult learning sessions take place on a Tuesday and Thursday evening in Craigmillar Library and at Screen Education Edinburgh. The sessions within high school’s take place during lessons on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Along with our Through the Lens ESOL learning sessions happening on a Thursday at the South Bridge Resource Centre, which is in partnership with the adult family learning team, in the wider achievement and lifelong learning department at City of Edinburgh Council.

This Programme is supported by Screen Scotland, The Robertson Trust, and The City of Edinburgh Council
